From the time it was published in the mid-19th Century, through the mid-20th Century, Bullfinch’s Mythology was pretty much “the” mythology text. It contains English versions of Greek, Roman, and Arthurian myths, as well as Medieval romances. It’s imminently readable, and it can definitely be an interesting read. One thing that’s important to keep in mind is that it is not an exact translation, so if you’re looking for one of those, you may want to look elsewhere. If you don’t need something that precise, however, this is an excellent starter text to help you begin your study of mythology. One great thing about Bullfinch’s Mythology is that it’s both out of copyright and available for free on Project Gutenberg’s website.
